ABOUT GUEST ARTIST GIOVANNI HIDALGO
Giovanni Hidalgo has played with an impressive line-up of the most prominent musicians in the local scene since he was nine years old. Musicians and groups such as the Mario Ortiz Orchestra, the legendary Charlie Palmieri, and Zaperoko. His percussive skills were enhanced, developed, and influenced by the wide range of different styles he played. While traveling with his band, Batacumbele Band, to Cuba, he met musician José Luis Quintana, and together they created a style of rhythm that ushered in a new era in Latin music. Afterwards he was honored to play with Eddie Palmieri, Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra, Linda Rondstat, Bruce Hornsby, and too many others to mention.
In 1990 he recorded the Grammy Award-winning CD “Mickey Hart & Planet Drum.” In 2007, he recorded the Grammy Award-winning CD “Global Drum Project” with Mickey Hart, Zakire Hussain, and Sikiru Adepoju. In May 2010, Hidalgo was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. Visit: www.giovannihidalgo.com
