Icehouse Theatre, The

On September 17, 1948, a handful of residents of Mount Dora met to discuss forming a little theatre. Enthusiasm was so great that officers were elected that very night. Within days, an abandoned ice plant was located and with a lease in hand, the IceHouse Players were on their way. After five months of back-breaking renovation that included the use of sledge hammers and TNT, The IceHouse Players opened to a full house on February 7, 1949 with a light comedy set in a summer stock theatre called, “Return Engagement.” We continued to produce quality theatrical performances in the converted ice plant for ten years. In 1958, on land donated by the municipality, the current 275-seat facility was built; it holds a 30’ wide proscenium stage; backstage are two modest dressing rooms. Set construction, rehearsals and performances share the stage area throughout the day. The founders had a dream to provide quality theatrical performances that would challenge the minds of our patrons, inspire children of the communities we serve and bring families closer through the shared experience of participation in live theater. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and their dedication and commitment are inspiring. Support from the residents and visitors to the area continues to grow.
